Expect Sandy to be hardest on the elderly.

Many elderly died in Hurricane Sandy “Most drowned alone in bedrooms, living rooms and basements that flooded.”

The elderly are especially vulnerable during a natural disaster.

“The elderly were most likely to die during Hurricane Katrina”

Several reasons are suspected for the high death rate of elderly during Katrina. The elderly:

  1. thought the news of the pending hurricane was a false alarm
  2. stayed in their homes to prevent looting
  3. stayed in their homes, unwilling to leave their familiar surroundings
  4. were frail and vulnerable, unable to fight the force of the storm.

I fully expect these same reasons to be behind the majority of deaths of the elderly in Hurricane Sandy.

Communities need to prepare for the rescue of the frail and elderly before, during, and after powerful storms.
